Aran knitwear is now recognized the world over as a very distinct Irish style of cream knitted garments (with new colors more recently introduced). It all began with the Aran sweater (‘Geansaí Árann), a style of sweater that was traditionally knitted in the Aran Islands, off the west coast of Ireland. These wives of fishermen knit these to keep their husbands warm at sea – the sweater was traditionally cream in color and bulky in texture, with prominent cable patterns on the chest. In fact, the jumpers were originally knitted using unscoured wool that retained its natural oils to make the garments almost water-resistant. Today, Aran garments are distinguished by their use of complex textured stitch patterns.
